Edinburg Confirms Plans To Bring Vaquero Football To H-E-B Park

Edinburg, TX, November 29, 2023 — In a concerted effort to enrich the collegiate experience and foster community spirit, the City of Edinburg, in partnership with the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), is actively working with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to host Vaquero football games at H-E-B Park. This collaborative initiative seeks to bring the dynamic energy of collegiate football closer to the local community, solidifying Edinburg’s position as the proud home of UTRGV.

The project is poised to elevate UTRGV, providing a transformative addition that enhances the entire academic and athletic journey. Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. reassured residents about the city’s commitment, stating, “UTRGV football is a source of pride for our community, and I’m pleased to share that our efforts come with no additional cost to our residents. We are working hard to support the university, creating an opportunity for all of the Rio Grande Valley to celebrate the spirit of Vaquero football without any added financial burden.”

UTRGV President Dr. Guy Bailey expressed anticipation about the prospect. “We are looking forward to working with the City of Edinburg on the possibility of bringing UTRGV football to H-E-B Park. If acquired, this stadium immediately provides our football program with an outstanding venue that could be ready for our 2025 debut.”

The joint efforts of the City of Edinburg, EEDC, and UTRGV signify a commitment to create an environment conducive to the success of UTRGV Vaquero football at H-E-B Park. The collaboration aims not only to enhance the college experience but also to contribute to the overall vitality of the region.

Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa lauded the announcement, stating, “This stadium will generate excitement among students, unite RGV fans, and serve as an economic boost for the RGV.
