City of Edinburg Observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day With Cemetery Clean Up
Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg’s Juneteenth Committee, in conjunction with the UTRGV Center for Student Involvement, will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with a “Clean Up” at the Restlawn Cemetery at 1122 North Jasman Road in Edinburg, Texas.
The Historic Restlawn Cemetery, located in the northwest corner of Hillcrest Cemetery, is the burial place established for African Americans in Edinburg in 1928. It will be the site for a tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 16, from 9:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., celebrating the nationwide ‘MLK Day of Service.’ On that day, volunteers will help clear debris and paint fencing to restore the cemetery’s appearance.
The community and the Rio Grande Valley are encouraged to come out and donate their time to a great service project honoring Martin Luther King Jr. The day’s events will include a short program commemorating the cemetery’s importance to the City of Edinburg and the South Texas community, as well as words by the Mayor and Council on the importance of “Serving the Community.”
