7th Annual “Purple Day” Supports Domestic Violence Awareness Month
EDINBURG – The Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney’s Office; the Rio Grande Valley District Attorney Coalition; the Texas Council on Family Violence; the City of Edinburg; Edinburg Police Department; Mujeres Unidas; and the Hidalgo County Family Violence Taskforce will commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month with the 7th annual “Purple Day” event on Thursday, October 20, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Bert Ogden Arena parking lot located at 4900 S I-69 C in Edinburg, TX.
“Purple Day aims to provide prevention education to the general public on the topic of domestic violence,” said Criminal District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez, Jr. “This year’s event will be a joint effort with the Rio Grande Valley District Attorney Coalition. Our office stands united against domestic violence and we invite our entire community to join our prevention efforts.”
The Rio Grande Valley District Attorney Coalition includes Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez, Jr; Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz; Willacy County District Attorney Annette Hinojosa; and Starr County 229thDistrict Attorney G. Allen Ramirez.
The news conference will include comments by DA Rodriguez; Executive Director of the Texas Council on Family Violence Gloria Terry; City of Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza; Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala; Legal Services Manager of Mujeres Unidas Cecilia Mata; Domestic Violence Unit Chief Amy Cantu; and the Masters of Ceremonies of the event will be Rosie Martinez, Victims Unit Director of the Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.
The event is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to wear purple in support of Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.
In addition to the press conference on Oct. 20, Mujeres Unidas will host the 29th annual Candlelight Vigil on Oct. 12 to honor all victims that have lost their lives to this heinous crime. The DA’s office will join in celebrating the lives of the many domestic violence survivors that have been assisted and are no longer in abusive relationships.
