Edinburg TX – Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala has announced his upcoming retirement from the Edinburg Police Department, effective Oct. 30.

Ayala, who took over leadership of the department in October 2021, will conclude a five-year tenure in Edinburg before returning to North Texas, according to the city.

Ayala is a 1983 graduate of Edinburg High School and began his career in public service as a volunteer reserve officer and dispatcher for the Edinburg Police Department. He later served 32 years with the Arlington Police Department, rising to the rank of assistant police chief, before returning to lead the Edinburg department.

During his five years leading a force of 266 officers and professional personnel, Ayala oversaw the implementation of several public safety initiatives, including a Drone as a First Responder Program, described by the city as the Rio Grande Valley’s first operational drone program for rapid situational awareness during critical incidents; a Business Watch Program establishing partnerships with local businesses to deter crime; a Dog Walker Watch program encouraging residents to help serve as extra eyes and ears in neighborhoods; and a “Make a Plan” campaign aimed at combating driving while intoxicated across the city.

Ayala reflected on his time leading the department. “Serving as Police Chief in the city where I grew up has been the absolute honor of my career,” Ayala said. “I am deeply grateful to the city leadership, our officers, staff, and the community for their unwavering support over the past five years. As I prepare to return to North Texas to spend cherished time with my family, I leave knowing that the Edinburg Police Department is stronger, safer, and positioned for continued excellence.”

The City of Edinburg thanked Ayala for his service and leadership. Information regarding transitional leadership and the search for the next police chief will be released by city administration in the coming weeks.
