About Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free, more than two months after the Civil War had ended and more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. The delay meant that enslaved people in Texas were among the last in the nation to receive word of their freedom.

The holiday, whose name combines “June” and “nineteenth,” has been observed in Texas communities for more than 150 years and was made a federal holiday in June 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Texas was the first state to recognize Juneteenth as an official state holiday, doing so in 1980.
