Edinburg City Council to review zoning requests, financial report and park naming proposal

Edinburg, TX – The Edinburg City Council will consider zoning changes, a proposed park field renaming, a temporary permit for the Special Olympics Texas Spring Games and several administrative agreements during its regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 17 at City Hall. Council members will also receive the city’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025.
Mayor’s report and recognition
The meeting agenda includes the mayor’s report highlighting upcoming city events and announcements. Events listed include the 6th Annual Edinburg Community Health Fair, the 14th Annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Dance Competition, the 20th Annual The Big Squeeze, the 6th Annual Outdoor Expo and the 45th Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Council members will also present a proclamation recognizing March 2026 as Theatre in Our Schools Month. The recognition was requested by Rio Grande Valley High School Thespian President Jose JT Gonzalez.
Financial presentation
Finance Director Ascencion Alonzo is scheduled to present the city’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025. The report provides a review of the city’s financial performance and fiscal position for the previous budget year.
Public hearing items
Council members will hold several public hearings related to land use and city facilities. One item involves a proposed comprehensive plan amendment and rezoning request for a property located at 223 W. Schunior St., seeking to change the designation from Neighborhood Commercial to General Commercial.
Another hearing will consider a proposal to rename Edinburg Municipal Park Baseball Field No. 7, located at 714 S. Raul Longoria Road, in honor of Fernando “Fernie” De La Garza at the request of the Edinburg Little League Board.
Additional routine public hearing items include rezoning requests for properties located at 703 W. Cano St., 5161 N. I-69C and 2812 E. Davis Road.
Ordinance and agreements
The council will consider an ordinance granting a temporary special use permit for the Special Olympics Texas Spring Games scheduled for April 8 through April 10 at the Edinburg Parks and Recreation facility. The ordinance also includes a temporary road closure for Mark S. Pena Drive during the event.
Council members will also consider an interlocal agreement between the City of Edinburg and the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District for the joint use and development of Fountain Park.
Consent agenda
Items listed on the consent agenda include budget amendments for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, a resolution related to American Rescue Plan Act funding, ratification of a grant application under the Operation Stonegarden program, a waterline access agreement with North Alamo Water Supply Corporation for the Palma Ranch Subdivision and an agreement related to staffing services with the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation.
The council will also consider the disposition of approximately 47 cubic feet of non-vital city records in accordance with records management policies.
