Daycare worker arrested after investigation into injuries to 1-year-old, Edinburg police say

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – An Edinburg daycare worker was arrested this week after police say surveillance video showed her acting aggressively toward a 1-year-old child who was later found with visible injuries.

According to the Edinburg Police Department, officers received a complaint on Jan. 23 alleging possible injury to a child. The report stemmed from an incident that allegedly occurred three days earlier, on Jan. 20, at a daycare located in the 5500 block of South Sugar Road.

Police said the child’s mother noticed injuries after picking up her son from the daycare. The injuries were reportedly visible on the backs of the child’s legs and underneath his chin.

Detectives launched an investigation and identified the child’s caretaker as Brenda Rae Perez, 45, of Edinburg.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from Jan. 20, which police say showed Perez acting aggressively toward the child and striking him in the face at least once.

Perez was arrested on Jan. 26 and charged with Injury to a Child, a third-degree felony, according to police. Bond was set at $50,000.

The investigation remains ongoing.
