Library to Host First Gingerbread Village Contest During Winter Celebration

Staff Report

Edinburg TX – Families looking for a hands-on holiday project will have a new option this December as the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library launches its first Gingerbread Village Contest.

The city library’s children’s department is inviting children and their parents to build their own “gingerbread” houses and drop them off at the library Dec. 10–17. The contest is designed as a family activity and will be featured during the library’s “Holly Jolly Winter Celebration.”

Unlike traditional gingerbread contests, entries cannot include any real food. All houses must be created and decorated entirely with craft materials.

According to the library, contest guidelines include:

• Entries must be dropped off by a parent at the Children’s Department between Dec. 10 and Dec. 17.
• Each house must fit within 15 inches by 15 inches in both width and height.
• No food items of any kind are allowed; structures and decorations must be made with nonfood craft materials only.
• Any house that includes food will not be accepted.

All gingerbread houses will be placed on display from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 18 during the Holly Jolly Winter Celebration at the library, where attendees will be able to view the entries and vote for their favorite design.

Awards and a gift basket will be presented to the top three entries, giving families a chance at both prizes and what organizers describe as holiday bragging rights. The library is encouraging families to treat the project as a creative craft activity and to use the contest as a way to work together during the holiday season.

Participants will be able to pick up their gingerbread houses Dec. 22–30 from the Children’s Department.

The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library, which operates under the City of Edinburg’s Library and Cultural Arts Department, is located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd. For more information on the contest, families can contact the Children’s Department at 956-383-6246.
