Precinct 4 Opens First Community Closet to Expand Access to Basic Needs

Staff Report

Edinburg, TX – Hidalgo County Precinct 4 has launched its first Community Closet inside the Precinct 4 Endowment Center, creating a new resource for residents who need clothing and essential personal items. The site, located at 107 Sunflower Road in Edinburg, is the first of its kind in any Hidalgo County Community Resource Center.

The project was established through a memorandum of understanding between Hidalgo County and the AltaCair Foundation, a regional nonprofit that focuses on providing equitable access to basic necessities for underserved communities. County officials said the partnership formalizes a shared goal of improving public welfare by reducing barriers to everyday essentials.

Image previewPrecinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres said the closet is intended to help families who may be struggling with unexpected expenses or long-term financial challenges. The operation will offer free clothing and personal care items, with inventory supported by public donations and ongoing contributions from AltaCair.

Torres said the precinct hopes the center will ease pressures on households and eventually lead to similar efforts across the county.

Residents can donate items or schedule appointments to visit the closet by contacting the AltaCair Foundation at 956-935-6667. The foundation and the Endowment Center plan to continue collaborating on programs aimed at improving quality of life and expanding access to services throughout Hidalgo County.
