Ochoa, Diaz Win Edinburg Races; De Leon, Segovia Head to Runoff

Arnoldo Mata
Edinburg, TX – Preliminary election results show Omar Ochoa and Daniel “Dan” Diaz winning their respective races for mayor and City Council Place One, while Jason De Leon and Moises Segovia will advance to a runoff for City Council Place Two.
Under Edinburg’s election rules, candidates must receive more than 50 percent of the total votes cast, plus one additional vote, to win outright. Ochoa secured 5,768 votes in the mayoral race—well above the majority threshold. Richard Molina received 2,678 votes, followed by Johnny Garcia with 695 and Jonathan Salinas with 79.
In the City Council Place One contest, Daniel “Dan” Diaz earned 5,462 votes to Ismael “Smiley” Martinez’s 3,252, giving Diaz a clear majority and eliminating the need for a runoff.
The City Council Place Two race, however, remains undecided. Jason De Leon led with 3,767 votes, followed by Moises Segovia with 3,264 and Eddie Badillo with 1,605. Because no candidate received a majority, De Leon and Segovia will advance to a runoff election.
City officials emphasized that the results are preliminary. Final numbers will be tabulated and certified by the Edinburg City Council at a later date, likely later this month. The runoff election date is also expected to be set at that time.
