Edinburg, TX – Edinburg Police Lt. Gabriel Vela-Reyna has been recognized among the world’s top young law enforcement professionals, earning a place on the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 2025 “40 Under 40” list. The honor was announced during the IACP Annual Conference and Exposition in Denver, Colorado, one of the largest global gatherings for police leadership.

The IACP 40 Under 40 Award highlights emerging leaders who demonstrate excellence in leadership, service, and innovation in policing. This year’s class includes honorees from the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, British Columbia and Pakistan.

“Lt. Vela-Reyna’s innovative approach to community policing has set a standard not only for our department, but for agencies nationwide,” said Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala. “His leadership embodies the spirit of service, trust, and collaboration that defines the future of policing.”

Vela-Reyna has led several community engagement programs in Edinburg, including Dog Walker Watch, Teen Academy and Business Watch. Each initiative aims to strengthen neighborhood safety, mentor youth and build partnerships with local businesses.

A graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police and recipient of the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award, Vela-Reyna has worked to expand community policing across 16 neighborhoods and 64 businesses. He credits the success of these programs to teamwork and collaboration within the department.

“I’m truly humbled and honored to receive this recognition,” Vela-Reyna said. “This award reflects the hard work, dedication, and heart of my brothers and sisters in the Edinburg Police Department.”

Vela-Reyna’s journey—from working as a migrant laborer to becoming a recognized leader in law enforcement—has inspired many within the community.

The IACP Annual Conference, held Oct. 18–21 in Denver, drew more than 16,000 public safety professionals for training, education and networking.
