Trenton, Monte Cristo and Schunior road upgrades lead Edinburg–Pct. 4 push

Staff Report

EDINBURG, TX – Three major corridors—Trenton Road, FM 1925 (Monte Cristo Road) and Schunior Road—headline a slate of roadway projects the City of Edinburg and Hidalgo County Precinct 4 are advancing through new interlocal agreements aimed at improving safety, mobility and regional connectivity.

Trenton Road improvements
The partners will share costs equally to upgrade Trenton Road from I-69C to FM 907 (Alamo Road), covering planning, right-of-way, utilities, engineering and construction. Hidalgo County is leading the project, which is 40% designed and targeted for completion in fall 2030.

Monte Cristo Road improvements
Identified by the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization as a high-priority corridor, FM 1925 (Monte Cristo Road) will be widened from McColl Road to about 1,500 feet west of 10th Street (Trooper Moises Sanchez Blvd.) into a four-lane divided urban facility. Engineering is complete, with construction slated to begin in spring 2026.

Schunior Road improvements
A third agreement upgrades Schunior Road from N. Jackson Road to Hoehn Drive, and Hoehn Drive from Schunior Road to SH 107 (W. University Drive). The project converts a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane divided urban section. Under the deal, the city will fund 60% and the county 40% across all phases, with construction scheduled to be completed by 2029.

“These major roadway projects represent a significant investment in the future of Edinburg,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said, noting the partnership enhances safety and supports growth. Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres added that collaboration on road work “creates the connectivity that drives communities forward.”

Officials said the three projects represent a combined $12.6 million investment shared by the city and county. For more information, contact the City of Edinburg Engineering Department at 956-388-8210.
