Staff Report
EDINBURG TX — The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce is inviting the public to attend the 19th annual Texas Cook’Em: High Steaks in Edinburg, set for Thursday, July 4, at Ebony Hills Golf Course. The event will feature a full day of barbecue competitions, family-friendly activities, live entertainment, and a fireworks display.
Admission is free to the festival, which celebrates “freedom, family and barbecue,” according to Ronnie Larralde, executive director of the Edinburg Chamber and Edinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau. Cook teams will compete for $12,500 in cash prizes, with winners advancing to national championship events — the American Royal World Series of Barbecue and the World Championship Steak Cookoff in Fort Worth.
Gates open at 8 a.m. with barbecue competitions running throughout the day. A Kids Cook’Em contest will allow children to test their grilling skills, with all supplies — including pits — provided by H-E-B. Registration is available at edinburg.com.
Entertainment begins at 4 p.m. with live music and a variety of attractions, including a car and truck show, a family fun zone, and a hot dog eating contest — the Sonic Crush Hotdog Showdown — scheduled for 6:15 p.m. A skydiving demonstration called the Freedom Jump is set for 8:15 p.m.
Musical acts include tribute bands honoring Taylor Swift, the Foo Fighters and Garth Brooks. The night will conclude with a 10-minute fireworks show.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and outdoor games to enjoy the celebration. For weather updates or event changes, the public is asked to follow the Edinburg Chamber’s social media pages or visit edinburg.com.
