Hidalgo County Cancels 2025 Operation Border Health Due to Budget, Staffing Challenges

Staff Report
EDINBURG TX – The Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department has announced the cancellation of this year’s Operation Border Health event, which had been scheduled for July 21–25, 2025.
The decision was made in coordination with the Texas Department of State Health Services and other regional partners, citing recent funding cuts and a reduction in the local workforce. County officials said they could not support an event of this size at the standard the community has come to expect.
“As a long-standing public health initiative, Operation Border Health has helped us fulfill our mission of expanding access to care and preparedness for the past 25 years,” said Dairen Sarmiento Rangel, Director of Hidalgo County Health and Human Services. “We know its absence this year will be felt, and this decision was not made lightly.”
Operation Border Health has historically provided free medical services and public health resources to thousands of area residents, often in collaboration with state and federal agencies.
Despite the cancellation, county health officials emphasized that public health services remain available through clinics across the region. These facilities continue to offer immunizations, health screenings, and preventive care to eligible individuals.
In addition, Community Resource Specialists are available to assist residents in accessing programs such as Medicaid, CHIP, TANF, SNAP, Women’s Health Program, Healthy Texas Women, and other support services. The department also continues to operate in-house initiatives like Hidalgo Blue and the County Indigent Health Care Program, which provide medical services to low-income residents who are ineligible for state or federal coverage.
