Com. Ellie Torres, Dos Vientos Residents Celebrate New Street Lights

Staff Report

EDINBURG TX – Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres will host a community celebration on Wednesday, July 16, to mark the installation of 15 new streetlights in the Dos Vientos Subdivision.

The project, which serves approximately 192 residents across 58 lots, is part of a broader initiative to improve safety and infrastructure in rural and unincorporated areas of the county. It also highlights a notable example of resident participation, with Dos Vientos residents working closely with the commissioner’s office to fulfill all requirements of the county’s streetlight program.

In addition to securing the necessary documentation and gaining support from more than 75% of landowners, residents organized a cleanup effort to prepare the area for installation. Volunteers cleared brush, trimmed trees, and ensured that lots were accessible for safe and efficient work.

“This project is a true example of what can happen when residents and local government work hand in hand,” said Commissioner Torres. “The people of Dos Vientos were proactive every step of the way — from organizing their paperwork to physically preparing their neighborhood.”

The streetlight program aims to enhance neighborhood security by deterring crime and improving nighttime visibility. Subdivisions must submit a signed census from at least 75% of property owners as part of the application process.

Wednesday’s celebration will include remarks from local officials, refreshments, and a ceremonial lighting at dusk. The public and media are invited to attend.
