Tragedy Unfolds in Rural Edinburg: One Fatality, Another in Critical Condition Following Shooting Incident, 3 Arrested

Edinburg, Texas – November 4, 2023 — An early morning incident in rural Edinburg resulted in one fatality and another person seriously injured. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident.

At 3:39 a.m., the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) was dispatched to the 7200 block of Iowa Road in rural Edinburg, Texas, following a call regarding shots fired. Deputies arrived at the scene and met with witnesses who described a disturbance taking place on the roadway, and discovered that two individuals had suffered gunshot wounds as a result.

The victims, in need of medical attention, were promptly transported to a nearby hospital. There, the gravity of the situation became tragically apparent. Medical staff informed the HCSO that a 16-year-old male, one of the victims, had succumbed to his gunshot wounds. The second victim, a 21-year-old female, was fighting for her life and remained in critical condition.

In response to this grim incident, Major Crimes Investigators, accompanied by Crime Scene Specialists, arrived at the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. As they work to piece together the events that unfolded, investigators are engaging with witnesses present at the scene and collecting critical pieces of evidence.

The men arrested are 21-year-old Pharr resident, Antonio Rodriguez; 20-year-old Pharr resident Joseph Castillo and 18-year-old San Juan resident Rudy Coronado. All three men have been charged with Murder and booked into the Hidalgo County Jail, pending formal arraignment. 

This incident is an ongoing criminal investigation, and authorities are seeking any information that may help them unravel the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.
