TxDOT Conducting Travel Surveys to Improve RGV Transportation

Staff Report
EDINBURG TX – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is conducting household and business travel surveys to gather data that will help improve the Rio Grande Valley’s transportation system.
In collaboration with the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, TxDOT is assessing local travel patterns to determine which projects could enhance regional transportation networks. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in the survey process.
Household Surveys
Postcards have been mailed to selected households, directing recipients to sign up at Lone Star Travel Survey. Once 2,500 households have enrolled, participants will track their travel for 24 hours on an assigned weekday during the school year. Data can be recorded through a mobile app or entered online. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, depending on travel habits.
Business Surveys
Businesses in the region have received letters inviting them to take part. Once a business agrees, respondents will complete a survey about travel patterns, and counting equipment will monitor vehicle traffic at select locations.
