Staff Report

EDINBURG TX —Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. announced today, Jan. 29, that he will not seek re-election, citing his focus on health following a recent prostate cancer diagnosis.

“After a routine doctors visit and subsequent tests, I have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer,” Garza explained. “While this comes as a complete surprise, I plan to fight this head on and I am confident I will beat it. After consulting with my family and prayer, I have decided to not seek reelection for Mayor. I fully intend to complete my current term and wanted to make this announcement to focus on my health and give others the opportunity to prepare for a run. Please keep me and my family in your prayers as we deal with this situation.”

Garza, who has served as mayor since 2021, stated that he remains committed to completing his term and continuing to serve the community. His decision comes as he prioritizes treatment and recovery.

“Our entire city family stands with him during this time,” city officials said in a statement, expressing support for the mayor.

Garza has been a key figure in Edinburg’s economic development and infrastructure initiatives. His leadership has included efforts to enhance public safety, attract new businesses, and improve city services.

The mayoral election will take place later this year, with candidates expected to file in the coming months.
