Edinburg CISD Police to Crack Down on Illegal School Bus Passing
Staff Report
EDINBURG, Texas — The Edinburg CISD Police Department will begin extra patrols to catch motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses, thanks to a $95,000 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The initiative, part of a High Visibility Enforcement Project, aims to enhance student safety on roadways. Police officers will increase patrols in and around the Edinburg School District to enforce traffic laws protecting school buses.
Edinburg CISD Police Chief Ricardo Perez and Transportation Director Alonzo Barbosa are set to discuss the initiative alongside representatives from neighboring police and transportation departments at their monthly meeting. The discussion will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Edinburg CISD Transportation Annex, located at 1015 E. Schunior St.
Motorists are reminded to stop for school buses displaying red flashing lights, as failure to comply can result in significant fines and penalties.
