Hidalgo County Courthouse Certified by Texas Jail Standards

Staff Report

EDINBURG – The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has certified the holding facilities in the new Hidalgo County Courthouse, affirming they meet the state’s minimum standards for jail construction and operation.

The certification marks a critical milestone in the completion of one of the largest construction projects in Hidalgo County history, according to Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “With last week’s Certificate of Occupancy that was provided by the City of Edinburg, the transition from the old courthouse to the new will now begin in earnest,” Cortez said.

The transition process, which includes relocating millions of legal documents and hundreds of courthouse employees, is expected to take between 60 and 90 days.

Meanwhile, work on Phase 2 of the courthouse construction project is proceeding as scheduled.
