It was not a happy Thanksgiving Day for an Edinburg man as he was arrested for allegedly shooting at an Edinburg police car. It was not known if he was served a turkey meal in custody.

“This is a prime example of the risks our officers take in keeping our community safe. The use of unmanned aircraft technology was critical in identifying the location of the suspect and taking him into custody without incident,” said Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala.

The shooter was identified as 40-year-old Brett Thomas Martinez from Edinburg. Martinez has been charged with two counts of 1st Degree Felony Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

On Thursday, November 24, 2022, at about 12:30am Edinburg Police officers were dispatched to the 500 block of West Owassa Rd. in reference to a man walking behind a residence with a rifle. Several concerned callers heard gunshots. When officers arrived to search the area, they heard several gunshots and were able to determine the location of the suspect and where the shots had been fired. With the use of drone technology, the suspect was located and detained. A rifle was recovered.

Through the course of the investigation, officers discovered that an Edinburg Police Unit was struck by two bullets during the incident.
