Hidalgo County to Install ‘Veteran Parking Only’ Signs at Technical Schools for Women Veterans Day

Staff Report

EDINBURG TX – In observance of Women Veterans Day, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez will lead an initiative to install “Veteran Parking Only” signs at local technical institutions of higher learning to honor and recognize veterans, particularly women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The announcement follows positive community feedback from a similar effort during Armed Forces Week. A press conference marking the launch of the new phase of the program will be held on June 12 at Southern Careers Institute in Pharr.

The signs will designate parking spaces near high-traffic campus buildings, especially those hosting student veteran services and events. Officials say the initiative is intended both to show appreciation and to raise awareness about the contributions and challenges of women veterans.

“This is an important step in recognizing the valuable contributions of women veterans,” Judge Cortez said. “Women have been serving in our military for generations, and this event underscores our commitment to ensuring they have a meaningful presence.”

Women Veterans Day marks the anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which granted women permanent status in the U.S. military.

The Office of Judge Cortez also offers a Veterans Resource Guide to help local veterans and their families connect with essential services and support.
