Dustin M. Sekula Library to Celebrate Global Cultures in Week 2 of Summer Reading Program

EDINBURG TX – The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library will continue its 2025 Summer Reading Program, “Color Our World,” with a weeklong celebration of global cultures from June 15 through June 20. The second week of the program will feature interactive, hands-on events for adults, teens, and children, designed to highlight cultural diversity through art, food, dance, and history.

Adults are invited to participate in the “Colorful Cultures” series beginning Sunday, June 16, at 2 p.m. with a painting class featuring lanterns and pagoda designs. On Monday, June 17, at 2 p.m., Prairie View A&M Extension will present A Taste of African Heritage, exploring the Emancipation Proclamation and African heritage through food and storytelling. A special folklórico dance performance follows on Tuesday, June 18, at 2 p.m., and the week concludes with a DIY colorful African jewelry session on Wednesday, June 19, at 2 p.m.

Teens can join the “Color Me Global” program starting Saturday, June 15, at 2 p.m. with a sushi-making workshop. Evening sessions continue with a cherry blossom painting class on Sunday, June 16, at 6 p.m., a DIY African jewelry activity on Monday, June 17, at 6 p.m., and a hanging Khatam décor workshop on Tuesday, June 18, at 6 p.m.

Children will take part in the “Color My World” series with activities offered daily at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. from June 16 to June 19. Events include a culinary class inspired by the Pacific Islands (June 16), a DIY piñata during Toddler Time (June 17), African Kente paper weaving (June 18), and Hathi elephant painting (June 19). The week will wrap up with a special guest visit on Thursday, June 20, at 10 a.m.
