TOMORROW: Edinburg to Honor Fallen Heroes at Memorial Day Ceremony

EDINBURG TX – The City of Edinburg will host a Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony on Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium, 200 N. 7th Street, to honor military service members who died in defense of the United States.

Recognized by the Texas Legislature as a “Hometown of Heroes,” Edinburg will mark the occasion with a solemn program that includes musical tributes, reflections, and the symbolic presentation of the Battlefield Cross by the Edinburg High School JROTC Honor Guard, under the direction of SFC (Ret.) Micaela Reyes.

Members of American Legion Post 408 will read the names of Edinburg’s 90 fallen service members—from World War I through recent conflicts—ensuring their sacrifices are remembered. The city has extended a special invitation to the families of these individuals to attend the ceremony.

The event will also feature a moment of silence in memory of Mrs. Dolia Gonzalez, the mother of Edinburg native and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez. Mrs. Gonzalez was known in the community for her strength and grace, and her legacy continues to inspire.

“Memorial Day is a sacred time for our community to come together, reflect, and honor those who gave everything for our freedom,” said Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr.

The event is free and open to the public. Veterans, military families, students, and civic organizations are encouraged to attend.
