EDINBURG, TX — The Hidalgo County Housing Authority and McAllen Housing Authority have announced the availability of 50 Foster Youth Initiative (FYI) housing vouchers to assist young adults who have aged out of the foster care system.

The FYI vouchers provide subsidized rent to former foster youth aged 18 to 24, aiming to reduce homelessness, promote independence, and improve life outcomes during the transition to adulthood. The vouchers support housing stability, allowing recipients to focus on education, employment, or vocational training.

A University of Texas at San Antonio study highlights that former foster youth are nearly seven times more likely to complete a degree when they have access to support services. Despite the availability of a tuition waiver, only 1.5% of foster youth earn a bachelor’s degree, according to a 2018 report.
