EDINBURG TX — Evangelina “Eva” Leon, PhD, currently Dean of Instruction at Economedes High School, was named as the new principal at that high school at last night’s Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees meeting.

The position has been vacant since then-principal Jesus R. Mata retired from his position with the school district, effective Jan. 31, 2025, following allegations of harassment.

After a lengthy closed door Executive Session that included a number of personnel items, Superintendent Dr. Mario Salinas recommended the hiring of Leon as the new principal. The Board voted to approve the recommendation without any discussion.

According to the district’s website, Leon has been Dean of Instruction since August 2022. Previously, she served as an Assistant Principal, Literacy Coordinator, Instructional Coach and Teacher.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of Texas – Pan American, her Masters in Education from Lamar University and her Doctorate from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
