Edinburg Police Investigate Student Assault at IDEA Public Schools Campus

Staff Report

EDINBURG TX – The Edinburg Police Department is investigating an assault involving two juvenile students that occurred during school hours on Tuesday, April 15, at an IDEA Public Schools campus.

According to authorities, the incident involved a male student who physically assaulted another student. The juvenile suspect has since been taken into custody in connection with the case.

Investigators also interviewed a female student believed to be involved in a prior related altercation. Charges in that case are pending. Police say the suspect claimed the April 15 assault was in retaliation for an earlier incident on April 9, during which the victim allegedly slapped the suspect’s sister. That earlier altercation was also reported to Edinburg police.

In response to growing concern, including the circulation of a video on social media, officers visited the campus on Wednesday, April 16, to meet with parents and family members. Officers offered updates on the investigation and provided clarification on the complaint process.

“We are aware of the video circulating on social media and understand the concern it has raised,” said Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala. “The safety of every student in our community is non-negotiable. All reports of violence and bullying—whether initial or retaliatory—are taken seriously. Our priority is to ensure a safe, respectful, and secure learning environment for every child, and we will continue to investigate all sides of this matter thoroughly.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
