Com. Ellie Torres Launches Mosquito Control Effort After Heavy Rains

Staff Report

Edinburg TX — In the wake of recent heavy rainfall, Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres has initiated vector control operations aimed at curbing mosquito populations and reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

Beginning yesterday, Precinct 4 crews started to apply larvicide and conduct mosquito spraying in targeted areas, with a focus on standing water in right-of-way locations. Initial treatments are already underway, with crews addressing standing water zones throughout the precinct on Friday.

Spraying will take place at night when weather conditions are favorable, specifically when there is no rain or wind.

“We strongly encourage residents to take action as well to help control mosquito populations and enhance our efforts,” Torres said.

Residents are advised to take several precautions to help reduce mosquito breeding, including removing standing water from flower pots, birdbaths, gutters, and other areas where water may accumulate. Additional recommendations include using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus; wearing long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk; and ensuring doors and windows are closed or properly screened.

Updates on the vector control efforts can be found on Precinct 4’s social media platforms. For more information, residents can contact the Precinct 4 office at (956) 383-3112.
