Edinburg declares disaster after historic rainfall floods city

Staff Report

EDINBURG TX — City officials have declared a local state of disaster following nearly 12 inches of rainfall in less than 24 hours on March 27, causing severe flooding, widespread road closures and numerous water rescues.

The heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems, leaving entire neighborhoods submerged and forcing emergency crews to respond swiftly to stranded motorists and residents. First responders from the Edinburg Fire and Police Departments were deployed throughout the city as water levels rose rapidly.

“This extreme weather event has placed a tremendous strain on our community, and our top priority is ensuring the safety of our residents,” said Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. “We are working around the clock to provide assistance, deploy resources, and coordinate with state agencies to address this emergency.”

The City of Edinburg activated its Emergency Operations Center to manage rescue and recovery operations. Officials are urging residents to avoid flooded areas and observe all road closures.

“We urge everyone to stay vigilant and informed as conditions continue to evolve,” Garza said.

Residents can find ongoing updates and emergency information through the City of Edinburg’s official website and social media channels.
