American Legion Post 408 Offers Scholarships to Class of 2025 Seniors

Edinburg TX — The American Legion Alfredo Gonzalez Post 408 is offering a scholarship opportunity for high school seniors graduating in 2025. Applications are now being accepted, with a submission deadline of April 11, 2025.

The scholarship aims to support local students in their pursuit of higher education. Graduating seniors interested in applying can request an application by emailing [email protected].

The American Legion Alfredo Gonzalez Post 408, located at 4605 S. Closner Blvd., stands as a tribute to two of Edinburg’s distinguished Medal of Honor recipients: Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Cantu Gonzalez and Pvt. Pedro Cano.

Sgt. Alfredo Cantu Gonzalez, born on May 23, 1946, in Edinburg, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965. During the Vietnam War, he demonstrated extraordinary bravery, particularly during the Battle of Huế in 1968. Despite multiple injuries, Sgt. Gonzalez led his platoon with unwavering courage until he was mortally wounded on February 4, 1968. His valor earned him the Medal of Honor posthumously. 

Pvt. Pedro Cano, also from Edinburg, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In December 1944, during combat in France, he single-handedly destroyed multiple enemy positions, actions for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2014.

Established to honor these local heroes, Post 408 serves as a community hub for veterans and hosts various events, including dances and comedy nights. The post is committed to supporting veterans and their families, as well as engaging with the broader Edinburg community.

The American Legion, one of the nation’s largest veterans service organizations, is dedicated to supporting veterans, their families, and local communities through various programs, including scholarships and youth outreach initiatives.
