Staff Report

EDINBURG TX — The City of Edinburg, in partnership with the Juneteenth Committee and the UTRGV Center for Student Involvement, will mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a community service event aimed at preserving a historic landmark. Volunteers are invited to participate in a cleanup effort at Restlawn Cemetery on Monday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Located at 1122 North Jasman Road, Restlawn Cemetery was established in 1928 as a burial site for African Americans in Edinburg. It stands as a significant piece of the city’s history and serves as a reminder of the enduring contributions of the African American community in South Texas.

The event is designed to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service and community engagement. Volunteers will assist with activities including:

  • Clearing debris from the cemetery grounds.
  • Painting and restoration of fencing and crosses to enhance the site’s appearance.
  • Landscaping tasks such as mulching and trimming overgrown branches and bushes.
  • Donations to support the Memorial Wall at Restlawn Cemetery.

In addition to the service activities, a commemorative program will highlight the historical significance of Restlawn Cemetery. City leaders will deliver remarks reflecting on Dr. King’s vision and the importance of collective action in fostering unity and progress.

The City of Edinburg is encouraging residents and community members from across the Rio Grande Valley to join this effort to preserve an essential piece of local history while embodying the spirit of Dr. King’s mission.
