Museum of South Texas History to Open Meteorite Exhibit, “The Shooting Star of Starr County”
Staff Report
EDINBURG – The Museum of South Texas History will unveil a new exhibit, “The Shooting Star of Starr County: An Out of this World Discovery,” on Friday, Sept. 20, in the Cell Block Gallery of the historic 1910 Jail building. The exhibit will highlight the meteorites that fell near El Sauz, Texas, earlier this year.
On Feb. 15, 2023, meteorites were discovered on a ranch in Starr County after falling from the sky, with both expert and amateur collectors documenting the fragments. The exhibit will explore the journey of the meteorites from space to South Texas and offer insight into the history of space rocks. Featured pieces will be displayed in cases allowing a 360-degree view.
Supported in part by a grant from The Betty S. Kelso Foundation, the exhibit will run from September 2024 to August 2025 and is included with regular museum admission.
Museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
