Staff Reports
EDINBURG, Texas – July 4, 2024 — In anticipation of the approaching Hurricane Beryl, the City of Edinburg has announced a sandbag distribution to help residents prepare for potential flooding. The distribution will take place from Friday, July 5, through Sunday, July 7, at two locations: the Edinburg Service Center at 1201 N. Doolittle Rd. and Edinburg Municipal Park at 714 S. Raul Longoria Rd.
The sandbag distribution schedule is as follows:
- Friday, July 5: 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, July 6: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Sunday, July 7: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Residents must live within the city limits and provide proof of residency, such as an ID and a utility bill. Each household is eligible to receive six bags, while businesses can receive eight bags. Additionally, residents can bring their own bags to fill with an unlimited amount of sand at the self-serve location at Edinburg Municipal Park.
With Hurricane Beryl projected to bring high winds and heavy rain to the region, city officials are urging residents to take necessary precautions. The National Weather Service has indicated that Beryl could significantly impact the Rio Grande Valley, increasing the likelihood of flooding and other storm-related hazards.
“We want to ensure our community is well-prepared for the impending severe weather,” said a representative from the City of Edinburg. “Distributing sandbags is a crucial step in helping our residents protect their homes and businesses from potential flood damage.”
Weather permitting, the distribution will proceed as scheduled. However, in the event of severe weather, the distribution may be paused as staff will be required to respond to public safety needs.
