Edinburg to Host 31st Annual Juneteenth Celebration
Staff Reports
EDINBURG, Texas — The City of Edinburg invites the community to its 31st annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 15, 2024. The event, honoring the rich Black heritage of the Rio Grande Valley, kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a commemorative ceremony at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium. The ceremony will feature motivational speakers, musical performances, and highlight Edinburg’s Black historical sites and notable individuals.
Juneteenth, now a national holiday, marks the end of slavery in the U.S. Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom.
Following the ceremony, the celebration will move to the Food Truck Park at 201 N. 7th Ave at 7 p.m. Attendees can enjoy $5 all-can-ride carnival rides, stilt walkers, Soul music, food vendors, and an engaging Juneteenth block party. The evening will also feature a special performance by the marching band from La Marque, Texas.
This event is organized by the City of Edinburg, the Library & Cultural Arts Department, and the Juneteenth Jubilee Committee.
