Person Of Interest Identified In Rural Edinburg Killing

Edinburg, TX, January 11, 2024 – Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office investigators have identified a person of interest in a tragic incident this past Wednesday. Mario Cordero of Edinburg is being sought in connection to the case.
On January 10, 2024 deputies from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting in the 5600 block of Wakita Dr., located in rural Edinburg, Texas.
Upon their arrival, deputies discovered an unresponsive male subject with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene, the man was pronounced deceased.
Major Crime Investigators and Crime Scene Specialists at the location conducted interviews with witnesses and collected crucial evidence to identify the suspect(s). The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Michael Daniel Arevalo, a resident of Edinburg, Texas. In response to the incident, a local Justice of the Peace has ordered an autopsy to further investigate the circumstances surrounding Arevalo’s untimely death.
Sheriff Investigators spoke with witnesses who reported seeing two men dressed in dark clothing and wearing hoodies walking on the street when they began firing shots towards the victim. Through witness accounts, Investigators identified a person of interest, 22-year-old Mario Cordero from Edinburg, Texas. Investigators are actively seeking to speak with Cordero about his potential involvement in the shooting death of Arevalo.
