Edinburg Judge Wins Re-election, One Council Member Upset, One Race Has An 11 Vote Difference

Edinburg, Texas, Nov. 8, 2023 – Edinburg voters continued to bring in new leadership to the city council in yesterday’s election with one new council member. Another council member will return. However, that race hangs on an 11-vote margin that will likely lead to a recount.

All results are unofficial and still need to be canvassed to make the votes official.

Unofficial results from the Hidalgo County Elections Department Municipal Judge Hector Bustos Jr. easily beat challenger Armando Guerra by a 2-to-1 margin. Bustos garnered 4,451 votes to 2,149 for his opponent.

David Salazar will take over Place 3 from Council member Johnny Garcia. Salazar had 3,405 votes to Garcia’s 3,177.

In the Place 4 race, incumbent David White and challenger Gerardo “Gerry” Lozano wound up with an 11-vote difference that may lead to a recount. White carried 3,334 votes to 3,323 for Lozano.

The final vote canvassing will be done by the Edinburg City Council at a meeting likely to be scheduled for next week.
