Altercation In Rural Edinburg Leads To One Death

Edinburg TX, June 8, 2023 — A shooting in rural Edinburg early today resulted in the death of one man and the arrest of another for murder charges.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 8, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 6700 block of Argentine Road, a rural area in Edinburg, Texas. Subsequently, the incident was reclassified as a murder investigation.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies observed two individuals present on the property. One of the men was found standing beside a Ford truck, while the other individual had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was leaning against a black Chevrolet truck. 

Victim Pronounced Dead

The victim was immediately transported to McAllen Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot wounds. Justice of the Peace Jason Pena officially declared Vega deceased at 4:43 AM and authorized an autopsy.

The man by the Ford truck was identified as Antonio Garcia Garza, 34 years old, whereas the victim with gunshot wounds was identified as Agustin Anguiano Vega, 50 years old. 

Garza informed the deputies that he had engaged in a physical altercation with Vega, resulting in him shooting Vega.

Gun Found In House

The deputies interviewed a witness who resides at the location where the shooting took place. The witness handed over a black handgun to the deputies, which Garza had placed on the kitchen table following the incident.

Sheriff’s investigators obtained a search warrant for the property and collected evidence pertaining to the shooting. Additionally, illegal drugs were discovered inside Garza’s black Chevrolet truck during the investigation. 

Suspected Booked Into County Jail

The investigators interviewed the witness, who recounted seeing both men in close proximity to each other before hearing the sound of gunshots. The witness observed Agustin Vega had been shot, and Garza had quickly fled into the house while carrying a handgun.

Antonio Garcia Garza was taken into custody by the sheriff’s investigators and charged with murder, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana.
