Edinburg 2040 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council Appointed

MYAC Volunteer Program to Develop Leadership Skills and Increase Civic Engagement Among Local Teens

November 15, 2022 — The City of Edinburg announced the first-ever Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC). This seven-month program consists of 12 local high school juniors who desire to explore the field of public service and local government functions.

The MYAC is one of the eight committees created following the Edinburg 2040 survey held earlier this year, where residents expressed their needs and goals for the future of Edinburg.

MYAC members will get an inside look at how the City’s various departments serve the community through facility tours, the ability to interact with city staff and Edinburg City Council members.

The program is open to high school juniors from any school district in Edinburg. As part of the application process, the students submitted an Edinburg 2040 board application, expressed their desire to learn about our city, and provided their ideas in response to the essay question, “What you would like to see the City of Edinburg look like in the next 20 years?”

In their essays, students showed interest in a broad variety of subjects such as the environment, recycling, street improvement, cultural arts, and economic development.

“I’m excited about working with this group of youth to ensure that the 2040 plan reflects what matters to them. They will bring a different perspective to the table,” said MYAC Chairperson Sabrina Walker.

Twelve students were selected to participate in this volunteer program will consist of after-school sessions and a monthly meeting. Upon completion in May 2023, members will be eligible for a letter of recommendation from Edinburg mayor Ramiro Garza Jr.

“This is a unique opportunity for our students to learn how municipal government and policies play a role in the services provided to our citizens and the quality of life for our community. We are excited to have students engage in the Edinburg 2040 process as we work towards building a brighter and better future for our city,” Garza said. ” Having the participation of our local youth is crucial because they are set to become the future leaders of our community.”

On December 20th, members of the youth advisory council will have the opportunity to express their ideas and concerns to local leaders and city directors at an event hosted by the Edinburg Boys & Girls Club. The Edinburg Boys & Girls Club is also working on organizing an incentive package for members to attend a leadership opportunity in Washington, DC.
