Alley Theatre’s “Oskar’s Not So Simple Comeback” To Help Hidalgo County Children Deal With Learning Loss
EDINBURG – Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez has arranged for a visit to several Hidalgo County schools from “Oskar’s Not So Simple Comeback,” a theatrical performance, by Houston’s Alley Theatre.
The Office of Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez understands the COVID-19 pandemic created a situation for students that caused a sudden need to change habits and routines, especially due to remote learning. This sudden change impacted students’ concepts of safety and preparedness, leading to increased anxiety and stress levels. Judge Cortez is receptive to the fact that our children need support as they transition between different learning modalities and experiences. Investing in social-emotional learning and allowing children to process their experiences is the reason for Oskar’s visit.
“All of our lives were tremendously disrupted by the pandemic, but none more so than our school children,” said Judge Cortez. “This is part of an ongoing effort by Hidalgo County to help our children adjust to our new normal.”
Oskar will deal with learning loss and the effects of being away from the classroom for so long.
After trying to tackle his problems on his own, he’ll be compelled to find connection and
support from his peers, his teachers, his parents and his community.
Oskar, along with all the students watching the show, will walk away having learned valuable
social and emotional lessons about how to cope in this age of anxiety and how important it is to
stay connected to a support system.
The Alley Theatre is a Tony Award-winning theatre company in Houston, Texas. It is the oldest professional theatre company in Texas and the third oldest resident theatre in the United States.
Oskar will attend several schools at Donna, La Joya, McAllen and Weslaco ISD starting Monday, November 14, 2022 through Thursday, November 17, 2022.
